Oh the joys of my comfort zone. Warm, stress free, my little happy place. Its that place where I know I can count on to be dependable, unchanging and familiar. Then again … I could use those same adjectives to describe my bed.
I’ve realized that so many times when I go throughout my day I’m completely in the ZONE. From running from one meeting to the next, to workin’ out at the gym, I’ve got everything planned out to a T. Its either my way or the highway, take it or leave it, join me or be left behind. Okay I’ve become the queen of run on sentences but seriously.
I have a love hate relationship with my tendency to do this. I love being busy, there is no denying that, but at the end of the week its definitely not about how many meetings I made, or miles I log at the gym. Its about the relationships I’ve formed and the experiences I’ve gained through participating in almost everything under the sun.
From all this I’ve realized that I’m never satisfied with the number of things I HAVE to do, but rather the things I GET to do. I’m a strong believer in the simple things, like writing thank you notes completely unexpected, going out of your way just to make someone’s day just a little bit brighter.
These experiences aren’t just everyday. They’re the things that aren’t in the agenda, aren’t planned, yet more fulfilling then conquering a whole day’s worth of to-dos. Its in stepping out of that comfort zone that appreciation, graciousness and gratitude really get a chance to shine. Its no longer about our comfort zone but instead about extending ourselves purely for the sake of others.
Jesus didn’t have to spread the word of God. He didn’t have to endure all the ridicule and doubt that came with His sermons. Yet He did. Jesus extended himself to help others, going beyond his comfort zone to spread the good news. And He did it all for US.
