When I bought the bracelet in the picture above I was in need of some serious inspiration. I’m all about quotes and sayings that make you smile or motivate you when you’re struggling, so I’m always on the look-out for little things to do just that. This bracelet was really no different except that it wasn’t just a one time deal.
Ever since I picked it out from a quirky boutique by my house a year ago, it hasn’t left my wrist. Seeing it every where that I go gives me a chance to look at it, think about each word, figuring out what they really mean to me and how I can apply them to my life. Its uses are endless and I often find myself turning to these three little words when I’m feeling deflated.
Today in church the second lesson was from 1 Corinthians in which verse 13 states: “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” As you might imagine after my nerdy blog post about the sermon last Sunday, I was thoroughly excited to see my three favorite words given so much biblical weight.
The pastor’s sermon dove even further into the meaning of these words, and most importantly the meaning of love. He explained that love, while certainly an emotion desired by all, is much more about the act than the feeling. Love, is extending oneself purely for the sake of someone else.
Jesus was certainly not loved by everyone, yet that never stopped him from loving others unconditionally. Because He had love for all people, Jesus was able to show His faith in God to all He preached, with hope that their faith would motivate them to go and love others just the same.
While we can’t make everyone like us, nor can we be expected to like every person we ever run across, its not about like, but love. Extending ourselves and extending our faith and hope in the Lord, can be the greatest gift of love we have to offer.
